They say third time’s a charm, hopefully for me, second time around will suffice! I think this time I’ll stick to less controversial subjects on my blog…
My name, as you may have noticed is Mia, yours truly a VIP Host and UB Auction assistant! This blog project is very exciting for all of us at UB and it’s a way for you guys to get to know the hosts and our projects a bit more. I bet you guys have already spoken or chatted with most of the hosts and you probably even have your favorite one; but I am here to offer you the inside scoop on each one of them!
This week we’ll start with Cristina, one of the most experienced and well known hosts. I work very close to her cause she is in charge of the UB Auctions and the Store. As many of you may know, Cristina is a lovely and dedicated host. Usually she is very happy and cheerful, but when she gets upset you don’t want to be around!
Cristina has set the VIP Hosts standards extremely high cause she really demands excellence from us as hosts as from agents on other departments. Her first concern is the customer’s well being and she constantly strives to make sure this is paramount for all of us here. Cristina was also the lucky VIP Host that went to the Aruba Classic this year to attend our Icon players. She helped out in the VIP Booth and lounge and also worked a bunch on the UB Store at Aruba. She says she had a blast and made lasting friendships with many of our customers.
But I bet all of you are waiting for the juicy details about her! Well, here we go: Cristina loves sweets and food in general to be exact… She also gives the best massages in the world so I always try to bring her cookies (FYI: my passion is cooking!) to get her to give me a massage! I think it’s a fair exchange and I think she does too! She is always ready to party and her laugh can be heard for miles away.
Well, now you know a bit more about Cristina and I think there is almost no need to say this, but she is here to help you guys anytime! Keep tuned to my next blog to see who the lucky winner is that I’ll blog on; or if you want to know more about a specific host let me know and I’ll talk the talk…

Yes, it’s that time of year again. The calendar clearly reads January, but I know it’s going to take me at least a month before I can successfully write a check that acknowledges that it is actually 2009.
I’m not afraid of change or the future for that matter, but I’ve grown fond of (or at least accustomed to) 2008 and all her glory. Since it is too early for nostalgia, I guess I’ll get back to the equivalent of business. Yes, these are the days where I get to kick my Christmas tree to the curb and unravel that intricate web of holiday lights. Attention shopkeepers: I’m about to return a lot of unwanted gifts this week. Also, I need some new pants to accommodate my new waistline courtesy of that once-coveted festive cheer, or maybe just some time and a gym membership.
Those New Year’s Eve champagne stains I neglected to clean up are probably going to be a permanent fixture on my carpets, but at least they’ll remind me of the brilliant year that was, especially at UltimateBet. We rolled out exciting changes last year and we’re glad you could be a part of them. Here are a few highlights:
• Tour Of Duty Challenge: More than a few good men joined the UB army and fought hard during vigorous tours that transformed our poker tables into the ultimate battlefield. With chips in your arsenal you struggled for honor, victory, and the glory of a piece of $260,000.
• RAI$E: We reinvented the wheel with the ultimate poker rewards program that grows with you. The more you play, the more you earn. With free cash, tourneys, auctions, and shopping, and countless exclusive benefits, other poker rooms are going to need a ladder to even think about competing.
• Ultimate Leaderboards: Our new leaderboard makes it easier to get the recognition you deserve. With the best and most straightforward system in the biz you can compete and follow your favorites. Cash in just by hitting the tables!
• CEREUS: Things instantly got serious when we joined the CEREUS poker network. With more players, bigger tournaments, heftier jackpots, new software, and loads of new features, the action is better than ever.
Thanks for helping make our poker room a massive success. The best is yet to come in 2009!
Happy New Year!

Questions about charges on your online bank statement?
Don’t worry, until you receive a hard copy (paper) from your bank, the charges on your online statement often include things that are pending or uncleared for hours or days, and then go away once the transaction is approved or rejected.

It’s a simple fact: in poker, it’s the player who raises who controls the table at any given time. Other players have to react to this decision and it’s something you can use to your advantage whether playing poker online with us or when trying to take your friends’ money in that Tuesday night basement game. You’ll see it most often in limit poker games among neophytes, where it’s “Raise, Call, Call, Call” all night, but it happens more often than you’d think at “real” games, particularly if they’ve lasted a good while.
As most experienced poker players know, someone who calls consistently rarely has the cards they should be playing with in the first place. Whether it’s simple laziness (which is more common than you’d think) or an urge to be involved in the game at any cost, it’s a behavior that will allow you to plunder their bankroll. If there’s a short-stacked player in a Limit game, you may be able to bluff him out of some pots after you raise.
Another hazard of being a player who calls when they should raise is that you’ll lose your money to good players that will bet you out of pots that you should have won because you called and kept calling without paying attention. If you decide to raise pre-flow, you make a decision to show that you’re confident in your hand and the weaker players will either hand you their money later or fold.
Obviously, In no-limit games, the strategy of raising people out of pots can work better than in limit games, where the big bet is small and constant. Players have less to lose and the play tends to be a lot more free-wheeling in limit games, for good reason. Next time you’re sitting down to a no-limit table and you see this “duck, duck, duck” action, be the goose and raise, especially on the pre-flop. Shake them up a bit and get a little more money at the same time.

For most people the holiday season ends on January 2nd, as most folks have recovered from their New Year’s hangover and have to get back to work. It’s a bit different for me as my birthday is January 3rd, so the good times keep on rolling for a few days more. This birthday was a biggie, the big 4-0, and my “friends” decided I should celebrate by drinking whatever they put in front of me. Which was usually something noxious in a shot glass. Let’s just say I spent much of my special day on the couch, in my flannels, gobbling Advil.
But I wanted to post a few final photos from the year that was 2008, especially those from this year’s Aruba Poker Classic. I don’t know where you are, but here in Pittsburgh it’s about 30 degrees, overcast, with a 40% chance of snow. And that’s gonna be the forecast until St. Patrick’s Day. So what better way to chase away the endless winter blues than reminding yourself that there there are Paradises upon the earth:

In life there is time for work, time for play. The Aruba Poker Classic is a time for play:

And when you’re not playing yourself you can watch other people play…like Scott Ian and Pearl Aday:

That last pic came at the farewell party, and in between that and the welcome part there was actually, like a poker tournament. The reason why everyone flew to the island in the first place:

One player who wasn’t able to fly to Aruba in a timely manner was Phil Hellmuth, who was playing in the World Series of Poker-Europe as the Classic got underway. It isn’t that easy to get from London to Aruba and as Phil winged his way south his chips were slowly blinded off. And everyone had a bit of fun with Phil’s doppleganger:

Phil didn’t make it before he was blinded out, but both P0ker H0 and Gary “debo34″ DiBernardi made deep runs. H0 and entered the next-to-last day near the chip lead…before getting a bit frisky in two big pots with Matt Brady. Pots that both went Brady’s way, leading to H0’s sudden and surprising exit. And I’m sure he’ll be thrilled that I brought that up:

When the final table was set the plan was to hold it outside, as is custom at the Aruba Poker Classic. And as the final touches were given to the stage built over the Radisson swimming pool, it looked like this would be a stupendous venue:

Mother Nature, alas, had other ideas. Some clouds rolled in, and then it got dark, and then it started to drizzle, and then an Old Testament-caliber downpour inundated the stage and sent everyone scrambling inside:

OK, it doesn’t look it’s raining too hard in that picture but it was coming down pretty good. And it’s a bit hard to play poker when the whipping wind sends cards flying into the pool and raindrops are splattering on the chips. So we went inside to see who would win the Classic and take home the $1 million first prize:

And in the end it was P0ker H0’s nemesis Matt Brady who endured a long three-way battle with runner-up Johan Storakers and Jeffrey Papola to take down the title. And the bracelet. And the mounds and mounds of yummy, yummy greenbacks:

And with the tournament over it was time for a relaxing, low-key, dignified end to the week:

So, that was the year that was. One of my resolutions is to get better at this photography thing and take better pictures. So hopefully The Year in Pictures 2009 will be bigger and (much) better than this year. If you’d like to see more pics from the World Series or Aruba you can click the links and find those sets at my Flickr page. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna take two more Advil and see if I can fully put my birthday party behind me.

Jack Of Hearts (real name? Jack Hart) first showed up in an issue of The Deadly Hands Of Kung-Fu back in 1976. His father, a human scientist, hooked up with an alien known as a Contraxian (because that’s what happens in comic books) and Jack was the result. Accidentally dosed with something called “Zero Fluid” as his old man died in front of him, Jack gained superhuman stamina and durability because of his half-alien genetic makeup, along with the power to generate “Zero Energy” and shoot it out of his limbs to zap people in the face or fly.
Jack of Hearts, despite having a totally rad name and a goofy costume, never managed to do much in the Marvel Comics universe. He fought Iron Man before teaming up with him (like pretty much every superhero team-up ever,) fought space commies on the moon, got a computer brain installed, got a suit designed to keep his “Zero Energy” in check, and basically was a walking, talking advertisement for playing cards. Sadly, Jack was pretty much relegated to b-list status and was used for cannon fodder in some Avengers story or another, blowing up in space after taking a kidnapper out for a bit of fresh air in the upper atmosphere.
Trivia Note: Jack was never invited to the floating poker game hosted by The Thing. That’s just mean, guys.
